PGA Tour - Cadence Bank Houston Open

A well-rounded Tony Finau is fulfilling his potential displaying precision en route to Cadence Bank Houston Open, 3rd win in last 7 starts

The narrative is no longer, “Can Tony Finau close?” The question is, “Can he be stopped?” His four-shot win Sunday at the Cadence Bank Houston Open was his third in past seven TOUR starts. While Finau admits that winning breeds confidence, that momentum has him moving in a positive direction, listening to him speak Sunday must make one wonder if perhaps we had it backwards. It was the continued progression of his physical gifts that allowed Finau to fulfill his potential.

The son of a Delta baggage handler, Finau got started in the game with a 6-iron purchased for 75 cents and pounded balls in his garage until his hands bled. There were times he slept in his car at junior tournaments, and the scars are still visible on his forearms from the fire-knife dancing he did to raise money for his junior tournaments. He turned pro at 17 and endured years on the mini-tours before reaching the Korn Ferry Tour.

He’s faced things more difficult than the final round of a PGA TOUR event.

“To be consistently great takes a full game both mentally and physically and I feel like, honestly, my physical game is starting to match up to my mental,” he said. “I've always been tough; I've always been strong mentally. Having a game that matches that is, I think, a great combination and I'm starting to see that with myself.”

In that context, his performance this week at Memorial Park may have been the most impressive of his five PGA TOUR victories. He led from start to finish, shooting 65-62-68-69. He held four-shot advantages after both the second and third rounds and was eight ahead with just nine holes remaining. He’s just the seventh TOUR winner in the past 20 years to lead the field in both Driving Accuracy and Greens in Regulation, and he was second in Strokes Gained: Putting to boot.

DP World Tour -Nedbank Golf Challenge

Tommy Fleetwood goes back-to-back at Nedbank Golf Challenge. Tommy Fleetwood held on to his crown at the Nedbank Golf Challenge after winning a thrilling battle with Ryan Fox down the stretch at the Gary Player Country Club.

Fleetwood and Fox went into the final round three shots behind Rasmus Højgaard and Thomas Detry and the overnight leaders had only managed five holes when play was suspended.

Fleetwood shot a five-under-par 67 to finish on 11 under, one ahead of Fox, who would have leapfrogged Rory Mcllroy at the top of the DP World Tour Rankings in Partnership with Rolex with a victory.

The victory was Fleetwood's sixth on the DP World Tour and first since this event three years ago, the last time it was staged due to the pandemic.

He said: "It's been a great week. I already had so many amazing memories of this place, such a great connection to it.

"It's amazing we got four rounds in in the end, and it was such a lovely feeling coming down the back nine with a chance. You draw on the good memories that you have round somewhere you've won. I felt good all day."

Japan Golf Tour -Mitsui Sumitomo VISA Taiheiyo Masters

Bashful prince Ishikawa recaptures his power. Former PGA Tour star Ryo Ishikawa ended a three-year title drought when he rolled in a birdie putt at the second playoff hole and beat Rikuya Hoshino to win the Mitsui Sumitomo Visa Taiheiyo Masters for the third time on Sunday.

Ishikawa carded a closing one-under-par 69 at the Taiheiyo Club's Gotemba's Course for a four-day total of eight-under 272, which was matched by Hoshino after he also returned an identical 69.

Starting the day three shots off the pace, Ishikawa overcame the deficit by carding five birdies against two bogeys and a double bogey while Hoshino had three birdies to offset two bogeys.

The latest win marked Ishikawa's 18th victory on JGTO, nearly three years since he last captured Golf Nippon Series JT Cup in 2019.

The victory also made him the only third golfer to have won three times at the Taiheiyo Masters after England's Lee Westwood (1996-1998), Masashi Ozaki (1973, 1992 and 1994) and Tsuneyuki Nakajima (1985, 2002 and 2006).

"Honestly, I can't believe it," said Ishikawa, who's fondly known by his fans as Hanikami Oji, literally 'Bashful Prince', due to his rock-star look.

"I have been working really hard to return to winning ways. I'm glad that I did it again after close to three years.

"But I still don't feel like I won. I won't rest on my laurels just yet. I will continue to aim higher without being content with my current self."

Professional Golf Tour of India - Ira presents Telangana Masters powered by Telangana Tourism

Manu Gandas successfully defends title despite last-hole scare

Manu Gandas overcame a scare on the final hole to defend his title and win the IRA presents Telangana Golconda Masters 2022 powered by Telangana Tourism with a four-day aggregate score of 23-under 257. Despite a double-bogey on the final hole, Manu finished two strokes ahead of second-placed Yuvraj Singh Sandhu at the Hyderabad Golf Association (HGA) course.

As a result of his fifth career win, Gurugram-based Manu Gandas (63-60-65-69) moved up one place to second position on the PGTI Order of Merit. Chandigarh’s Yuvraj Singh Sandhu (64-65-65-65) also moved up one spot and now tops the rankings.

Manu Gandas, the overnight leader by six shots, was well on course to the title till the 17th hole having led by four shots over Yuvraj Singh Sandhu. Manu’s excellent driving, approach shots and chipping earned him five birdies in exchange for two bogeys over 17 holes.

However, Gandas found the bunker with his drive on the 18th and then couldn’t get it out of the bunker with his second shot. He finally landed it just short of the green with his fourth shot and left himself a tricky 12-feet conversion for double-bogey after his chip. Manu then displayed his steely resolve as he sank the 12-feet pressure putt to seal the title with a two-shot margin over Yuvraj.

Asian Tour - International Series Egypt

Andy Ogletree confidently cruises to first professional victory at International Series Egypt. Andy Ogletree oozed class on his way to securing his maiden title in the professional game today after winning the US$1.5 million International Series Egypt at Madinaty Golf Club in Cairo.

The former amateur star found his feet in the play for pay game after firing a final round eight-under-par 62 to finish with a tournament total of 23 under and win by four shots from Austria’s Bernd Wiesberger, who returned a 63.

Ogletree started the day with a three-shot advantage from Wiesberger and took a firm grip of the tournament by touring the front nine in four-under-par 32 with birdies on one, three, five, seven and nine with a dropped shot on eight doing little damage to his lead.

“This is amazing, just incredible,” said the rising star from Little Rock, Mississippi, who earned a cheque for US$270,000.

“I have always been a huge fan of Matchplay and that is kind of what it came to in the end, it was basically a two-man race. I just tried to keep matching what he was doing, I kept making a lot of putts. Fortunately, I was able to play better than Bernd, he’s a great player and it was really awesome to come out on top.”

PGA Tour of Australasia - Victorian PGA Championship

Marvellous Martin wins 5-hole Vic PGA playoff. It took five birdies across five drama-fuelled playoff holes on the par-5 18th hole at Moonah Links’ Open Course for Andrew Martin to eventually become a Victorian PGA Championship winner for the first time.

Tighe made his first trip down the 18th for the day in the final group alongside South Australian Bland with a one shot advantage but a bogey courtesy of a shank from a greenside bunker brought him back to the pack.

Bland watched and waited as Tighe slipped up and suddenly his birdie putt was for the win, but he could not make it drop.

Roughly 45 minutes earlier Martin left short his birdie putt at the closing putt, which later revealed to be for the win, although that miss proved vital to his triumph in the end.

The 38-year-old from Bendigo produced the best round for the day amongst the playoff quartet with a bogey free, four-under 68 and he carried that momentum into the decider.

Bland and Coletta’s pars at the first playoff hole knocked them out, and then it came down to a one-on-one battle between Martin and Tighe’s contrasting styles.

Martin found his “links length” to reach the green in two for the first time, while the New South Welshman had to re-acquaint himself with the front left bunker that proved his undoing around an hour earlier.

The door had opened for Martin’s second win on the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia – he triumphed at TPS Sydney in 2021 – and he was not going to miss his chance this time.

He rolled his first putt to tap-in range and duly knocked it in for birdie as Tighe two-putted for par.

“I don’t think I’ve seen five drives off 18 like that since I’ve been coming down here to play. That was pretty impressive by Lincoln and he definitely had a good week,” Martin said.

“I played very well and the putter was definitely hot. It’s amazing to get the win.”
