PGA Tour - Wells Fargo Championship

Rory McIlroy and Quail Hollow Club are a match made in heaven. The love affair continued at this week’s Wells Fargo Championship. McIlroy carded a final-round, 6-under 65, including an 8-under, eight-hole stretch across holes 8-15 (two eagles, four birdies) to pull away from Xander Schauffele, who led by one leading into Sunday in Charlotte. McIlroy finished at 17-under 267, five strokes clear of Schauffele. It’s McIlroy’s fourth title at Quail Hollow – he also won the Wells Fargo in 2010 (as a 20-year-old, his first TOUR win), 2015 and 2021. McIlroy is now 35 and can call himself a 26-time PGA TOUR winner.

“I feel like these people have sort of watched me grow up from winning here as a 20-year-old to being the ripe old age of 35 now,” McIlroy said afterward. “They've sort of seen my progression throughout my career, and I've been lucky enough to win here four times.” McIlroy earns 700 FedExCup points and moves to No. 4 on the season-long FedExCup standings. He’s still well back of Scottie Scheffler (who didn’t play this week due to impending fatherhood) in the season-long standings, but if this week is any indication, McIlroy could be ripe for a summertime run to challenge the world No. 1.

PGA Tour - Myrtle Beach Classic

Chris Gotterup claimed his first win on the PGA TOUR atthe inaugural Myrtle Beach Classic, becoming the third PGA TOUR University alum to win on TOUR. Gotterup joins Austin Eckroat who won the Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches in March, and Ludvig Åberg who won the 2023 RSM Classic. In all, PGA TOUR University alumni have combined for 19 professional victories since the first class graduated in 2021.

Gotterup held a four-stroke lead heading into the final round, tying the largest lead on TOUR this season through 54 holes. After starting his final round with back-to-back bogeys, Gotterup responded with two birdies and an eagle on the next three holes, and three birdies on the final four holes to win by six shots, the largest margin of victory on TOUR this season. A product of Rutgers and the University of Oklahoma, Gotterup has now registered three consecutive top-25 finishes.

Gotterup earned his TOUR card for the 2024 season after finishing 23rd in the 2023 Korn Ferry Tour season-long standings. With the win, Gotterup earned a two-year exemption on TOUR and a spot in the field this week at the PGA Championship.

In addition to Gotterup, three alums finished in the top 15 at The Dunes Golf and Beach Club. Davis Thompson registered a season-best T2, while Kevin Yu and Mac Meissner finished T4 and T13, respectively.

Japan Golf Tour - For The Players By The Players

Cancer survivor Michael Hendry of New Zealand demonstrated that hope persists even after significant setbacks when he won For The Players by The Players in Gunma on Sunday, ending his nine-year bid for a second JGTO title. The 44-year-old garnered six points to secure the honour as the tournament's second champion, defeating second-placed Hideto Kobukuro by just one point.

Hendry, who held a four-point advantage overnight, started the day with a crucial eagle on the par-five second hole at The Club Golf Village and never relinquished his lead. He mixed two more birdies with three bogeys to finish with 38 points, lifting the trophy again after last accomplishing it at the 2015 Token Homemate Cup.

"I'm really happy. It's been a long time since I won at Token. There have been chances to win before, but I haven't been able to seize them, so I'm happy to have won this time," said Hendry.

Reflecting on the events of a year ago, Hendry expressed his desire for nothing more than a second chance at competitive golf after overcoming leukemia.

Little did he anticipate that fate had more in store for him than he had bargained for.

"A year ago, I received the diagnosis of leukemia, and it was a devastating blow. Throughout my hospitalisation, I remained confined to the hospital bed and lost 17kg," recounted Hendry.

"The hospitalisation was about three to four months. I couldn'tplay golf for five months. I was discharged in September and it was not until October before I started playing again. I'm truly grateful for this second opportunity in my golfing journey and the chance to return to professional competition. My current goal is to enjoy golf and cherish time with my family."

The victory held special significance for Hendry, particularly considering that just before his cancer diagnosis a year ago, he was showcasing some of his best golfing performances.

Challenge Tour - Challenge de España

Joel Moscatel birdied the closing hole of the Challenge de España at Real Club Sevilla Golf to seal a fairytale victory on home soil. The Spaniard signed for an impressive five under par final round of 67 to go with rounds of 68-71-68 and reach 14 under par for the week, one stroke clear of Finn Tapio Pulkkanen and Dane Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen on a dramatic day in Andalucía.

The 25-year-old was delighted to secure a maiden Challenge Tour victory in his home country, a result that sees him climb 26 places to third in the season-long Road to Mallorca Rankings.

“I don’t have words to be honest,” he said. “I played really well and I’m so happy. The home crowd were amazing, really supportive and I was feeling great all the way around.

“At the beginning the putts weren’t dropping but we were patient and stayed focused.

“There’s a lot of tournaments to play yet this year but obviously this win helps a lot. In Abu Dhabi I came close to winning, but I didn’t have the help of Alberto (Calvo) caddying for me, so maybe that was the difference. This is just amazing.”

Asian Development Tour & All Thailand Golf Tour - Singha Laguna Phuket Open

Thailand’s Pavit Tangkamolprasert held his nerve with a magnificent lag putt on the last hole of the Singha Laguna Phuket Open today, holding off a determined group of contenders to win by a single shot for his eighth victory on the Asian Development Tour

Five players finished in a share of second place at the THB4 million ADT / All Thailand Golf tournament, including Phachara Khongwatmai (68) and Rattanon Wannasrichan (68) who shared the final group with Pavit.

Also tied for second were Varanyu Rattanaphiboonkij (64), Sarut Vongchaisit (66) and Itthipat Buranatanyarat (67), all of whom were determined to try to spoil Pavit’s party.

“It was a little bit tight on the leaderboard, yeah,” said Pavit (67) after his round. “As I said before, anyone could have won it today in these kind of conditions but I had a good start.

“I made a big mistake on seven with a double bogey but the turning point for me was nine, 10 and 11. I managed to recover fast which kept me in contention.

“On 14 I had a chance to lead outright with an eagle putt but I three-putted which let the guys back into contention,” he revealed. “Even if I had birdied it might have got it done but nothing is easy in the final round.

Gira de Golf Professional Mexicana - Tour Championship

The Tour Championship has a new monarch. Brazilian Alexandre Rocha climbed positions to win the victory in the final stage of the 2023-24 season of the Mexican Professional Golf Tour (GGPM), held at Ventanas de San Miguel Golf & Resort.

A final round of 67 strokes, for a total of 265 strokes, 15 under par, earned Rocha his fourth victory in the GGPM and second of the year. The former PGA Tour player had already been the winner of the Mexico Invitational Golf Club, an event that marked the beginning of this campaign.

Rocha's triumph had a touch of drama, since the Mexican Óscar Serna, who arrived as leader, recorded a double bogey with water in between in the penultimate hole, which forced adjustments in the leaderboard. "The truth was very calm because with the wind, the conditions became more difficult," said Rocha, who at 46 was the oldest player on the field of 37 competitors.

Sunshine Tour - FBC ZIM Open

Michael Hollick kept the door firmly closed on prolific winner Darren Fichardt on Sunday as he shot an impressive final-round 67 to win the FBC Zim Open by two strokes at Royal Harare Golf Club, claiming his second Sunshine Tour title.

The Mount Edgecombe Country Club golfer and Fichardt, the 48-year-old with 18 Sunshine Tour titles and five on the DP World Tour, engaged in a tense final round, last two-ball duel on Sunday, with Hollick starting the fourth round with a one-stroke lead.

But with Hollick showing incredible composure and control, he never allowed the vastly-experienced Fichardt to get ahead. Hollick, who turns 37 on Wednesday, had opened up a three-shot lead by the fourth hole, but, unsurprisingly given his pedigree, Fichardt staged a fierce late charge that saw him close the gap to just one stroke on the 16th green.

Fichardt, who birdied the par-five 16th, would have drawn level but for Hollick sinking a clutch 30-foot par-putt. The Durban resident then birdied the 17th to go two ahead and almost certainly quell Fichardt’s challenge.

“Thanks to Darren for a helluva battle, well-played and we certainly had a good go at each other out there,” Hollick said at the prizegiving.

ProGolf Tour - Raiffeisen Pro Golf Tour St. Pölten

Yente Van Doren knows what it feels like to be right at the front. He's familiar with the inevitable nervousness that sets in when titles come within reach. In 2022, the Belgian celebrated his first and so far only victory on the Pro Golf Tour in Egypt. Back then, he triumphed in a thrilling playoff against four competitors.

Three podium finishes have already been achieved in the current season. Last week, he led the field in Haugschlag until the final third of the final round, narrowly missing the victory in the end. At the Raiffeisen Pro Golf Tour St. Pölten 2024, the 27-year-old, who studied in St. Louis, Missouri, put himself in an excellent position with sensational rounds of 63 and 65 strokes. His lead over the Dutchman Mike Toorop was three strokes.

Alps Tour Golf - Memorial Giorgio Bordoni presented by AON

Italy’s Mattia Comotti, 24, wins his 1st Alps Tour title at the 2024 Memorial Giorgio Bordoni presented by AON. He moved in the lead after yesterday’s round 2 and today he shot a 3 under-par, 67 to conclude the tournament with a three-day total of 15 under-par. Comotti turned professional at the end of July 2023 so this is his 1st full playing season on the Alps Tour as a professional player. In today’s final round, he made 4 birdies and 2 bogeys on the front nine and then 2 more birdies and 1 bogey on the back nine.

After his win, Comotti was very emotional and commented: “I’m extremely happy, I’m speechless to be honest. To earn my 1st win as a professional in not even a full calendar year since I turned pro is truly amazing. This win is for my entire family, but especially my mom, who passed away. To be honest I wasn’t expecting this win, I hadn’t booked a hotel room for last night. Normally, I’m always right on the cut line, but today, to be playing in the final pairing today and earn the win is extraordinary.” Comotti took the time to: “congratulate my playing partner Enrico Di Nitto. He’s a great fighter and we were very close for the entire day. Had he made the putt on the 17th hole, we would have been tied heading to the 18th and it would have been a great fight. I had a short putt on the 18th hole but I told myself if I miss I lose and need to play in a playoff against a great player so I really concentrated on making the putt.” For the rest of the season he plans on: “playing the entire Alps Tour season this year and trying to conclude the season as high as possible in the Order of Merit rank.”
